Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road’s (STRR) 21-kilometre stretch, currently under construction, will ease congestion and provide a crucial link to the upcoming Bangalore-Chennai Expressway (NE 7). The key section of STRR, connecting Hoskote to the Tamil Nadu border, is likely to open by March 2025. Once fully completed by 2027 (tentative), the 288-kilometre-long STRR will encircle Bengaluru, offering a much-needed bypass for commercial vehicles and significantly reducing traffic within the city.

A Vital Connector for Bengaluru and Beyond

The new Hoskote-TN border section of the STRR is designed to provide seamless access to the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway, which will serve as the eastern end of the proposed 330 km Bangalore-Mangalore Expressway. This connection is expected to become a key transportation corridor, improving the movement of goods and passengers across states.

This New Stretch Will Feature

Six lanes for smooth traffic flow

-11-metre-wide median, similar to the popular NICE Road in Bengaluru

-11 underpasses to improve safety and reduce bottlenecks

-A rail overbridge at Lingadeeramallasandra village over the Bengaluru-Chennai railway line, scheduled for completion by February 2025

STRR’s Future: What’s Next?

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already invited tenders for the remaining five stretches of the STRR, covering 144.25 kilometres at an estimated cost of Rs 4,749 crore. These sections are expected to be completed within two years.

Once Fully Operational, The STRR Will Help

-Divert long-distance traffic away from Bengaluru’s city center.

-Reduce travel time between major cities like Chennai and Mangalore.

-Improve logistics efficiency for commercial vehicles.

The expressway will also pass through the Bannerghatta National Park’s (BNP) eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) with a 28.5-metre right of way (RoW) and an 8.1 km elevated highway to minimize environmental impact.
