A family celebration turned sour in Bengaluru's Madeena Nagar, as two thieves took advantage of a birthday gathering to steal 30 grams of gold and Rs 2.3 lakh in cash from a home on Mangammanapalya Main Road. The incident occurred last week when the family was gathered on the ground floor of textile store owner Akbar Shariff’s residence, leaving the first floor vulnerable to intruders.

The duo, reportedly riding a scooter, had unsuccessfully attempted to rob several houses in the neighbourhood earlier that afternoon. Spotting the ongoing celebration at Shariff's home, the thieves discreetly parked their vehicle nearby and entered the house around 6:25 pm. They quickly seized the valuables from the first floor and were preparing to leave when a sudden power outage provided cover, reported TOI.

Taking advantage of the darkness, the suspects returned to the first floor, hoping to collect more items. However, Shariff's uncle noticed them and questioned their presence. The intruders claimed they were looking for a man named Gopal, a fictitious story and then hurriedly left the premises. Shariff’s wife soon discovered the missing gold and alerted the family, the report stated.

Shariff later filed a complaint with the Bandepalya police, stating that the cash was intended for shop supplies and usually not kept at home. Upon checking CCTV footage, Shariff found the thieves, believed to be in their early 20s, captured with a backpack that likely carried the stolen valuables.

Local authorities confirmed similar complaints from nearby residents, including an abandoned school bag with an Aadhaar card found in a nearby park. The police suspect the duo targeted homes with open doors, calling out random names to gauge whether occupants were present.

Police stated that they have launched an investigation and with crucial leads, they are expected to apprehend the thieves soon.
