Bengaluru Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast increased pre-monsoon showers for Bengaluru and  southern Karnataka. As per the weather body, northern parts of the state are expected to face scorching heatwave conditions. Bengaluru recorded unusually warm February, however, now it is now up for a summer filled with both extreme heat and heavier-than-usual rains.

What IMD Says

IMD forecasts that Bengaluru and other interior districts will receive 30-40 per cent more pre-monsoon rain between March and May, according to a TOI report. Coastal Karnataka and Malnad areas are likely to see even more—50-60 per cent excess showers. These rains will keep daytime temperatures in Bengaluru relatively normal, but the city’s urban heat-island effect will make it feel hotter, especially in crowded areas.

While daytime temperatures may seem usual, nights will be warmer. IMD senior scientist C S Patil explained that night-time temperatures could rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius above normal, making evenings and early mornings unusually warm.

North Karnataka To Face Heatwave Conditions

While Bengaluru gets relief from showers, northeastern districts of Karnataka will face intense heat. Temperatures there could soar between 43 degrees Celsius to 45 degrees Celsius in March. Fortunately, the heat intensity is expected to ease by April and May, spreading more evenly across northern Karnataka.

The rising temperatures are partly due to the weakening of La Nina conditions, which previously kept the region cooler. With these conditions stabilising, warmer weather is on the horizon.
