Bengaluru Weather Update: Bengaluru witnessed the 'driest monsoon month' in its climatological history in August- which is generally a rainy and pleasant month. This month, the city was supposed to get 163 mm of rain, but so far, it has only received 12 mm, a shortfall of around 90%.

"It is indeed the driest monsoon month in recent times. Generally, monsoon takes a break in August for a few days. But this year, we've seen a prolonged dry spell with a near-record rise in mercury levels," Prasad A, a scientist working with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru, reportedly told TOI.

Prasad further said, "The surge in temperature was such that out of 30 days in August, 19 days witnessed a temperature of at least 2-3 degrees above normal. While the record temperature for the month was 33.3 degrees Celsius recorded on August 6, 1899, Bengaluru clocked 32.6 degrees Celsius on August 28 (Monday). This was largely due to the dry weather and absence of humidity."

The city had been witnessing above-average rainfall until the first few days of August when it fell short of its typical allotment. This, along with other factors such as urban heat radiation and vehicle traffic, had a direct impact on the temperature.

According to another meteorologist, "As rainfall receded gradually, the temperature began to rise. Even though there was humid weather in the first two weeks regulating the temperature, the prolonged dryness also absorbed the moisture, leaving the city's weather completely dry, resembling a summer-like scenario."

The city also came very close to breaking its 124-year-old record for the warmest August in a century two days earlier, falling just 0.7 degrees short.
