Bengaluru News: A woman and a teenage girl allegedly tried to abduct a newborn baby from a city hospital, but the quick reaction of the infant’s aunt prevented the kidnapping. The incident occurred at HSIS Gosha Hospital in Shivajinagar and has raised serious questions about the hospital’s security arrangements.
According to police, the baby’s mother, 25-year-old Asma Banu, a resident of Someshwaranagar in Jayanagar, had been admitted to the hospital after experiencing labour pains on the night of November 2. She delivered a baby boy around 6:30 AM the next day and was later shifted to the general ward on the first floor.

Asma’s younger sister, Simran, stayed with her as an attendant. Later that night, a woman named Rafia entered the ward with a teenage girl. Rafia struck up a conversation with Asma, introducing herself as a visitor and requested to use her phone to call a relative. After pretending to make a call, she returned the phone, saying no one had answered.
The two stayed in the ward for some time, chatting with Asma while Simran briefly rested. When Asma went to the washroom with Simran’s help, Rafia allegedly picked up the newborn and attempted to leave the ward along with the teenage girl.
According to a Times Of India report, Simran noticed them walking away with the baby and immediately raised an alarm. She quickly confronted Rafia, took the baby back and alerted the hospital staff. The commotion drew the attention of other patients and workers, who helped detain the duo until police arrived.

Officers from Commercial Street Police Station soon reached the spot and took both suspects into custody. During interrogation, it was found that the teenage girl was only 13 years old and used to beg on the streets. Rafia, meanwhile, was separated from her husband, who has custody of their child. She reportedly confessed that she wanted a baby of her own and had decided to steal one from the hospital.
Police said Rafia lives with her brother and does odd jobs, occasionally resorting to begging. She met the teenager a few days earlier while begging and brought her along during the attempted abduction.
The girl was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and later handed over to her father. Rafia has been remanded to judicial custody. Police are investigating whether she had other motives or links to similar cases.
