Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway: The much-awaited Bengaluru-Chennai Greenfield Expressway is nearing completion, promising to cut travel time between the two cities from six hours to under three. Spanning 260 km across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, this is South India’s first access-controlled greenfield expressway, designed to enhance connectivity and economic growth in the region.
Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway: Final Construction Push After Temple Relocation
The last 400-metre stretch of the expressway in Karnataka had been stalled due to a temple along the route. However, with the temple successfully relocated, construction has resumed at full speed near Jinnagara Cross, Hoskote. According to Vilas P Brahmankar, Regional Officer of NHAI Bengaluru, this final section is expected to be completed by the end of the month, allowing seamless travel within Karnataka as per a report by Times Now.
Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway: High-Speed Travel and Future Expansion Plans
Built at a cost of ₹17,900 crore, the expressway currently has four lanes, with provisions to expand to eight lanes in the future. With a maximum speed limit of 120 km/h, it will ensure smoother traffic movement and faster commutes. Key interchanges at Hoskote, Malur, and KGF will enhance regional connectivity, benefiting both passengers and businesses.
Karnataka Section: Route Breakdown
The expressway's Karnataka stretch is divided into three packages:
- Package 1: Hoskote to Malur – 27.1 km
- Package 2: Malur to Bangarpet – 27.1 km
- Package 3: Bangarpet to Bethamangala – 17.5 km
This section will also provide direct access to the upcoming multi-modal logistics park at Dobbspet, strengthening logistics infrastructure and boosting trade.

Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway: Full Expressway to Be Ready by 2025
While the Karnataka section is almost complete, construction in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu has faced delays. Initially set for completion by March 2024, the entire expressway is now expected to be operational in 2025. Until then, commuters can benefit from the finished Karnataka portion, which will significantly improve travel within the state and to nearby regions.
