The Indian Army is set to raise the Bhairav Commando Battalions to enhance the striking capabilities along the borders with Pakistan and China.
According to a report by The Times of India, the army plans to raise 23 units of "agile and lethal" Bhairav battalions from the existing troops.
The report, based on sources, stated that five such units are planned to be raised by October 31, though it may take a little longer.
What is Bhairav Battalion?
The Bhairav battalions will have 250 specially trained and equipped soldiers in each unit. The units will have enhanced capabilities to strike swiftly in case of contingency. The idea behind the new battalions is to bridge a gap between the regular infantry and the elite Para-Special Forces.
The units will be much smaller than the infantry battalions, which have 800 soldiers in each unit. It will be equipped with the latest weapons, gadgets and drones.
The Bhairav commandoes will feature speed, flexibility, and high-impact tactical operation in their actions. The 'Bhairav' commandos will undergo specialised training for nearly three months in their respective regimental centres. After that, they will be attached to the Special Forces units in their respective theatres for another month for advanced training.
TOI quoted a source, saying, "The 'Bhairav' battalions, each with seven-eight officers, are also meant to relieve Special Forces, who can then concentrate on their more critical tasks."
