Bharat Atta:  The Union government in a bid to ward off high food inflation ahead of Diwali festivities, launched subsidised wheat flour named 'Bharat Atta', which will be sold at a rate of Rs 27.50 per kilogram. Notable the current market price of wheat floor is between Rs 35 to 70. Around 18,000 tonnes of Bharat Atta was initially sold under the Market Price Stabilisation Scheme in February at a few locations in a pilot project, the success of which has motivated the government to launch the subsidised flour across the nation.

'Bharat Atta' will be distributed via cooperatives NAFED, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar using 800 mobile vans and around 2,000 outlets nationwide. While flagging off 100 mobile vans of 'Bharat Atta' at the Kartavya Path, Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal said, "Now that we have tested and been successful, we decided to do a formal launch so that everywhere in the country can get atta at Rs 27.50 per kg."

The Union Minister also apprised of the government's plan to allocate 2.5 lakh tonnes of wheat to Nafed, NCCF and Kendriya Bhandar from the stores of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) at Rs 21.50 per kg. The agencies will make flour out of it, selling the 'atta' at Rs 27.50 for one kg, under the brand 'Bharat Atta'. This will help boost availability and check prices of wheat flour, he added.

The minister added that the government's initiative to provide certain essential commodities, including chana dal, tomato, and onion, at a subsidized rate has been effective in curbing the increase in prices.

Atta at 27.50, Chana Dal at 60 and Onion At 25 per Kg

Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar mentioned that out of the total 2.5 lakh tonnes of wheat, approximately one lakh tonnes each will be allocated to Nafed and NCCF, with Kendriya Bhandar receiving 50,000 tonnes.

These three agencies, through their mobile vans and outlets, will sell three commodities—wheat flour at Rs 27.50 per kg, chana dal at Rs 60 per kg, and onion at Rs 25 per kg.

The event was attended by Ministers of State for Food and Consumer Affairs Ashwini Kumar Choubey and Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra, and senior officials from Nafed, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar.
