Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that former prime ministers PV Narasimha Rao, Chaudhary Charan Singh, and agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan, also known as the father of India’s Green Revolution will be conferred Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. 

Generally, three Bharat Ratna awards are given in a year. However, the government has announced to honour five people with the Bharat Ratna this year including BJP stalwart LK Advani and former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur. 

Here Are The Five People Who Have Been Awarded Bharat Ratna This Year: 

Chaudhary Charan Singh 

PM Modi on Friday announced that former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh will be conferred with Bharat Ratna. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, he wrote, “We are fortunate to see former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh being conferred with the Bharat Ratna. This honour is dedicated to his contribution to the country. He dedicated his entire life to the rights of farmers and their welfare.”

Charan Singh was born in 1902 in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut and served as Prime Minister from July 28, 1979 to January 14, 1980. He reportedly started his political career with the Congress. He was initially elected to the Uttar Pradesh assembly in 1937 from Chhaprauli and was re-elected in 1946, 1952, 1962, and 1967.

PV Narasimha Rao 

Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao, popularly known as PV Narasimha Rao served as prime minister of the country from June 21, 1991, to May 16, 1996. He was born in Andhra Pradesh’s Vangara and was the first prime minister outside the Nehru-Gandhi family who completed a full five year-term in office.

MS Swaminathan

MS Swaminathan, also known as the father of India’s Green Revolution, played a significant role in yielding a variety of paddy that enabled Indian farmers to produce more yield. 

Swaminathan, who was born on August 7, 1925, had the vision to end hunger and poverty around the world. The United Nations Environment Programme refers to him as "the Father of Economic Ecology" as he advocated for sustainable development and biodiversity preservation.

LK Advani 

BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani had been BJP’s national president from 1986-90, 1993-98, and 2004-05. Advani, along with Atal Bihari Vajpayee played a significant role in founding the BJP in 1980. In 1990, he emerged as the face of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.

He served as home minister and then deputy prime minister in the administration of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee from 1999 to 2004.

Karpoori Thakur 

Karpoori Thakur, born in Bihar's Samastipur District in 1924, served as the state's chief minister twice: from December 1970 to June 1971 and again from December 1977 to April 1979.

He also mentored several prominent leaders of Bihar including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.
