Students from a government school in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal staged a protest on Wednesday accusing the school’s discipline in-charge of harsh punishments. The incident occurred at Sarojini Naidu Government Girls Higher Secondary School where the girl students vandalised school property, blocked roads and demanded the removal of the discipline in-charge Varsha Jha.

The students alleged that Varhsha Jha, a retired military captain, enforced severe punishments for minor infractions, such as arriving late. They claimed she often made latecomers stand outside in the scorching heat, sometimes leading to fainting. In response to the protest, the students demanded her immediate removal.

The students also complained about the poor condition of washrooms and insufficient water supply, urging authorities to address their grievances. Videos of the incident, which went viral, showed students smashing windows, breaking furniture and damaging electronic gadgets.

School Principal Malini Verma denied that any teacher had punished students, clarifying that Jha was not a regular teacher but a retired military officer appointed as the discipline in-charge. She added that education department officers were present to address the situation.

"We received information from Sarojini Naidu School that there were a few demands of the student due to which a law and order issue developed at the school. Following which we arrived here, we are trying to convince the student and coordinating with school management," ACP Habibganj, Mayur Khandelwal said.
