Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal has successfully launched its first "Algae Tree" technology, which absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and purifies the air. The tree is an innovative urban photobioreactor and is also the first in India. This new technology has been installed in Vivekananda Park in Ashoka Garden. With the rising air pollution, heatwaves, and smoke, the initiative is expected to be an effective green solution.
How Does It Work
The system uses microalgae to purify air, binding Carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen up to 50 times more efficiently than trees. It is a 600-liter tank filled with water and algae designed for dense city areas, acting as a space-saving alternative for enhancing air quality in environments where traditional tree planting is difficult.
The Mushroom World Group, who developed the system, claimed that one unit of Algae Tree has the capacity to absorb carbon equivalent to approximately 25 trees. Additionally, it can reduce up to 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide annually, which will help improve the air quality of cities.
The organisation says that the technology took approximately two years to develop. During this time, a team of over 50 experts, researchers, and engineers conducted research and testing. The system is engineered to capture carbon in a small space. It can easily be installed in public spaces, parks, busy markets and institutions, and traffic-heavy areas.
Initiative May Expand To Different Cities
Experts say that the initiative can be effective in other cities and for India as a whole to combat pollution. Pollution is increasing day by day with smoke and gases carried in the area. In such a condition, the algae tree will help reduce the carbon dioxide. The tree would maintain a desirable temperature in the area and provide clean air to the people.
Bhopal has now become the first city in the country to publicly implement this technology. Local residents are also enthusiastic about it. The organisation plans to expand the technology to other cities in the future. If this initiative turns out to be effective, Algae Trees would be installed in the other cities as well.
