The much-anticipated opening of the Bhopal Metro Rail has once again been delayed due to the pending second inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). The pending CMRS inspection is a mandatory step before passenger services can begin. The priority corridor was initially targeted for inauguration in December 2024, later revised to October 2025 and is now expected to open in early 2026, subject to pending safety clearances.
According to the official sources, the previous CMRS, Shri Janak Kumar Garg retired on October 31. Garg had completed the first inspection on September 24 and 25, but due to his retirement, the second inspection could not take place.
“The CMRS team must complete two visits before operations begin, one for the corridor and tracks, and another for the stations. The first round is done, and the second will take place once the new CMRS is appointed. Both reports will be released together,” said a Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL), quoted by the Metro Rail Today.

Civil and system works are largely completed across all the above stations, with minor finishing touches at Alkapuri, AIIMS and Rani Kamlapati still underway.
When Was Bhopal Metro Scheduled To Start?
The Bhopal Metro was launched in 2018 and was scheduled to begin by 2022. Phase 1 of the metro rail project covers two corridors totaling 28 km, connecting Karond Circle-AIIMS and Bhadbada Square-Ratnagiri Tiraha.
Ironically, Indore Metro which began construction after the Bhopal metro had already begun commercial services on May 31, 2025. The success of the Indore metro has put renewed pressure on the MPMRCL to fast-track the launch of the Bhopal metro.
