Bihar Electricity Bill Update: In a major relief for the residents, the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) has denied increasing the electricity tariffs in the state. The authority clarified that added tariffs will put pressure on the consumers, adding that the existing rates will remain in effect from April 1. The electricity firm had proposed a hike of 35 paise per unit, citing financial loss; however, the authority denied increasing the rates. The decision to not hike the tariffs is set to benefit lakhs of consumers across the state.
While announcing the order, BERC's Chairman Amir Subhani asserted that the electricity firms were not suffering financial loss. He pointed out that a hike in prices will put pressure on the consumers, adding that existing rates will be implemented from April 1. Along with the chairman, the meeting was also attended by the members Arun Kumar Sinha and Parshuram Singh Yadav, reported Jagran.com.

The authority clarified that a single tariff rate will apply to both urban and rural domestic consumers. Earlier, separate rates were applied for the consumers of different regions, leading to disparity. The latest move is likely to provide direct benefit to the consumers of the urban regions, reported Jagran.com.

While domestic users can expect a relief of up to Rs 1.53 per unit, the rural commercial consumers will pay 42 paise less per unit. Apart from this, the urban commercial consumers will also benefit from a Rs 1.20 per unit reduction. The authority asserted that the move will be reflected in their electricity bills, benefiting approximately 2.7 million consumers across the state.
The consumers can check their electricity bill by visiting the official website of North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (NBPDCL) or South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (SBPDCL) and by filling their 11-digit Consumer Number (CA Number).
The latest move is also likely to provide relief to lakhs of farmers who use tube wells for irrigation purposes. Earlier in November 2025, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also announced that the government will provide a concession in electricity bills for those starting any business in the state.
