Bihar SIR: The Supreme Court on Monday denied to extend the deadline of filing complaints regarding Bihar SIR after the Election Commission assured that it will consider the claims/objections even after September 1. The poll body assured that the complaints will be entertained till the last day of nominations. While hearing the petitions from the opposition parties to extend the deadline by two weeks, the top court pointed out that the trust deficit between the poll body and political parties is "unfortunate".
Taking note of this submission, a top court bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymala Bagchi did not pass any order to extend the September 1 deadline. The bench stated that there was an "issue of trust" between the poll body and the political parties and suggested the parties activate themselves ahead of the election. The court emphasised that the complaints can be filed even after the deadline of September 1.

"As regards extension of time, note says that filing of claims/objections or corrections is not barred after 1 Sept. It is stated that the claims/objections/corrections can be submitted even after the deadline ie after 1 Sept and same will be considered after roll has been finalized," the court stated.
"Process will continue until last date of nominations and all inclusions/exclusions are integrated in the final roll. In light of this stand, let the claims/objections/corrections be continued to be filed. Meanwhile, political parties/petitioners may submit their affidavits in response to the note," the court added.
Earlier during the last hearing, the top court had directed the poll body to allow the excluded voters to submit their applications with their Aadhaar card. The court also stated that the applications could be submitted through online modes. The top court had orally assured the political parties that an extension of the deadline will be considered if needed.
