The ongoing SIR in West Bengal has triggered a massive political row in the state, with BJP leader and Bengal LoP Suvendu Adhikari writing a letter to the EC, accusing CM Mamata of 'undermining' the Election Commission and shielding fictitious voters. Adhikari added that the TMC government has ‘nurtured’ these voters for a long time.

Adhikari's letter to the CEC came hours after Banerjee's communication to the poll panel on Thursday, November 21, in which she slammed the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as “chaotic and coercive”.

West Bengal LoP Questions TMC’s Letter

Leader of Opposition (LoP) and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in a rebuttal letter to the CEC Gyanesh Kumar, saying that her concern over the SIR in Bengal amounts to a direct attack on a Constitutional body.

Speaking to reporters, Adhikari said, "Who is Mamata Banerjee to stop SIR? This is a direct attack on a constitutional body. SIR is not a new process, but it is happening for the 9th time in the country. Since day 1, she has been scaring people, launching personal attacks against the Chief Election Officer, abusing CEC." The BJP leader further said that if there is no SIR in the state by February 7, the Assembly Elections will not take place in April.

Earlier, Adhikari had written a rebuttal letter to the CEC on Thursday, November 20, in response to the letter written by Mamata Banerjee. In his letter on Thursday, Adhikari alleged that Mamata Banerjee’s political theatrics in response to SIR is a deliberate attempt to undermine the Constitutional powers of the Election Commission of India (ECI). He claimed that it aims to create discord among election officials and to protect a vote bank comprised of ineligible and illegal voters.

Mamata Banerjee’s Letter To CEC

In her letter to the CEC, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the process of SIR is reaching an alarming situation in the state and the campaign is progressing in an ‘unplanned, dangerous’ manner in the state. As a result, the various government apparatuses in the state are crumbling miserably.

The West Bengal CM shared her previous letter on X (formerly Twitter) and described the SIR exercise as "unplanned, chaotic and dangerous," highlighting gaps in training, lack of clarity on documentation, and the impossibility of meeting voters amidst their work schedules.

"Sharing herewith my latest letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, articulating my serious concerns in respect of the ongoing SIR....," she wrote.

The West Bengal CM further said that most of the BLOs are struggling to fill out online forms due to lack of training. She warned that at this pace, it's almost certain that voter data for various constituencies won't be uploaded with the required accuracy by December 4th.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account, “Stopping infiltration in India is not only necessary for the country’s security, but it is also essential to prevent infiltration in order to protect the country’s democratic system from getting polluted.” Shah further wrote that political parties have embarked on a journey to protect infiltrators and thereby are opposing the ‘purification’ work done by the Election Commission in the voter list.
