Congress senior leader Shashi Tharoor has praised meeting between the US President Donald Trump and newly elected New York mayor Zohran Mamdani, asserting that "this is how democracy should work". He stated that both the leaders held the democratic spirit despite issuing harsh statements against each other during the mayoral poll campaign. The Congress MP stated that he wanted to see similar practice in India, receiving a praise from the BJP leaders. The BJP leaders claimed that Tharoor's post was a dig at the Congress party by suggesting the fellow party leaders to value nation over the Gandhi family. Tharoor's post came amid an ongoing rift with Congress in the past few months over his stand against the party line.
In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Tharoor emphasised that a cooperation is essential among all the political parties for a healthy democracy. "This is how democracy should work. Fight passionately for your point of view in elections, with no rhetorical holds barred. But once it's over, & the people have spoken, learn to cooperate with each other in the common interests of the nation you are both pledged to serve," Tharoor stated in his post.

"I would love to see more of this in India - and am trying to do my part (sic)," the Congress leader added. While praising him, the BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla claimed that Tharoor, through his post, has suggested the Congress leaders to prioritise the national interest, further suggesting that the opposition leaders should not behave like "sore losers".
"Once again, Dr Tharoor has chosen to remind Congress that they should put national interests above family interests and should serve and behave democratically rather than behave like sore losers," Poonawala stated in his video message. "But will Rahul Gandhi get the message? No, he might in fact get another fatwa issued against Dr Tharoor," the BJP leader added.
In the past few months, Shashi Tharoor's stance has not aligned with the party line, leading to a friction between him and the organisation.
