BJP stalwart Lal Krishna Advani will be conferred with Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday. PM Modi spoke to him on Saturday and conveyed the news to him.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, PM Modi wrote, "I am very happy to share that LK Advani will be conferred the Bharat Ratna. I also spoke to him and congratulated him on being conferred this honour.”

While announcing the honour for the BJP veteran, the prime minister said that Advani’s role in the development of India is monumental. He called him one of the most respected statesmen of India.

“One of the most respected statesmen of our times, his contribution to the development of India is monumental. His is a life that started from working at the grassroots to serving the nation as our Deputy Prime Minister. He distinguished himself as our Home Minister and I&B Minister as well. His Parliamentary interventions have always been exemplary, full of rich insights,” PM Modi wrote on X.

"The conferring of the Bharat Ratna on him is a very emotional moment for me. I will always consider it my privilege that I got countless opportunities to interact with him and learn from him," he wrote in another tweet.

Lal Krishna Advani, along with Atal Bihari Vajpayee played a significant role in founding the BJP in 1980. In 1990, he emerged as the face of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Soon before the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, he called himself the ‘charioteer’ who led the ‘rath yatra’ that reportedly started from Gujarat’s Somnath on September 25, 1990, and ended with the Babri Masjid's demolition on December 6, 1992.
