The BJP is moving towards a win in the Rajasthan local body election. Of the 309 urban local bodies for which results have been declared, the BJP won 163, the Congress 103, and independent candidates 43. There were 38,889 candidates in the fray. The results are clearing the way for the formation of governing boards in 10 municipal corporations, 47 municipal councils, and 252 municipalities. Counting of votes began at 8 am.
BJP Ahead In Corporations
BJP is currently leading in five corporations:
-Alwar
-Udaipur
-Kota
-Jaipur
-Bhilwara
Congress is ahead in three corporations:
-Ajmer
-Pali
-Bikaner
BJP and independent candidates are also leading in several municipal board areas. The ruling party is currently leading in more than 200 urban bodies. This impressive performance by the BJP is the result of a vigorous campaign by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, who held road shows in 10 cities before the elections. These results are being seen as a boost for the BJP government in the state.
Local Body Wise Status
Municipal councils (47): BJP has won 9, Congress 17 and Independents 2. AAP has won 32 wards and is preparing to form the board in Baran Municipal Council.
Municipalities (252): BJP is leading in 76, Congress in 49 and others in 11, while no one has a majority in 13. Results are awaited in 103.
Ajmer Municipal Corporation: BJP wins 9 wards, Congress gets 6.
Vote counting continues in Rajasthan's civic elections. Meanwhile, the BJP has won nine wards in the Ajmer Municipal Corporation, while the Congress has won six.
Bhilwara Municipal Corporation: BJP Wins 10 Wards
BJP has won 10 wards in Bhilwara Municipal Corporation, while Congress has won two wards.
Jaipur Municipal Corporation: BJP wins 17 wards.
In Jaipur Municipal Corporation, BJP has won 17 wards, while Congress has won six wards.
Jhalawar Municipal Council: Congress wins big in Vasundhara Raje's stronghold.
The Congress secured a clear majority in the Jhalawar Municipal Council, a stronghold of former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, winning 29 of the 45 wards. The BJP won 13 wards, while two independents and one AAP candidate also emerged victorious.
Elections Held In 2 Phases
The elections were held in two phases on September 9 and 11, and votes were counted simultaneously across the state. A total of 73.56 percent voter turnout was recorded in both phases, more than three percentage points higher than the previous urban local body elections. These elections featured candidates from major political parties as well as a large number of independents.
The BJP fielded 9,290 candidates, while the Congress fielded 9,027. Independents numbered 18,732. Other parties in the fray included the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) with 948 candidates, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with 311, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) with 298, the CPI(M) with 185, and the Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) with 98.
The contest is particularly crucial for the BJP government led by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. The party is looking to strengthen its position in urban Rajasthan after coming to power in the 2023 assembly elections.
For the Congress, these civic elections are an opportunity to demonstrate that, despite losing the assembly elections, its organizational base in the state remains strong. The results also offer an early indication of voter mood in Rajasthan's urban areas and the strength of the two main parties at the ward level.
