Blue Moon 2026: A rare celestial event known as the Blue Moon is set to light up the night sky on Saturday, attracting skywatchers across the world. The event has created excitement as it is not a common occurrence. In India as well, space enthusiasts and skywatchers are looking forward to this event.
What Is A Blue Moon?
A Blue Moon is the name given to a full moon that appears in a special way according to the calendar. It does not actually mean the Moon will turn blue in colour. Normally, there is one full moon each month, but sometimes two full moons occur in the same month. The second full moon is called a Blue Moon. Another type of Blue Moon also exists, called a seasonal Blue Moon. This happens when there are four full moons in one season, and the third one is called a Blue Moon.
Why Does A Blue Moon Happen?
A Blue Moon happens because the Moon takes about 29.5 days to complete one full cycle. Since most months are longer than this, sometimes two full moons fit into the same month. This is why a Blue Moon occurs once every few years.

When And Where To See It In India?
In India, the Blue Moon will be visible on the night of May 30 and will reach its brightest phase around the early hours of May 31. Skywatchers can look at the night sky from evening onwards to enjoy the view. The Blue Moon can be seen from all parts of India, provided the sky is clear and there are no heavy clouds or rain.
Will The Moon Actually Look Blue?
The Moon will not appear blue. However, it will look like a normal bright full moon with white and grey colours. Sometimes it may look slightly orange when it is near the horizon due to the Earth’s atmosphere. According to reports, real blue colour only happens in rare cases, such as after large volcanic eruptions or forest fires, when particles in the air change how light is scattered.
