The Election Commission announced that bypolls will be held in eight constituencies across seven states and Union Territories alongside Bihar’s assembly elections on November 11, with counting scheduled for November 14. The by-elections will take place in Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Telangana, Punjab, Mizoram and Odisha in a single phase
Bypolls are underway in Budgam following the resignation of Omar Abdullah, who had contested from two seats. In Nagrota, voting is being held due to the death of Devender Singh Rana. Other constituencies are also seeing by-elections after the demise of incumbent MLAs. In Rajasthan’s Anta, the bypoll is being conducted following the disqualification of Kanwarlal Meena after his conviction.

The Budgam bypoll was triggered by the resignation of J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who chose to retain his seat in the Ganderbal constituency. In the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, Abdullah had won Budgam by defeating Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP) candidate Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi by 18,485 votes.
Nagrota will go to a bypoll following the death of BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana last year. In the 2024 Assembly elections, Rana had defeated Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) candidate Joginder Singh by 30,472 votes.
What Are By-Polls?
By-elections, also called bypolls, are held to fill elected positions that become vacant between general elections.
The bypolls will be conducted alongside the Bihar Assembly elections, which are scheduled for November 6 and 11.
