Prime Minister Modi recently landed at the Northeast's first Emergency Landing Field using the C-130J Super Hercules, highlighting its robust capabilities. The landing highlighted the capabilities of the robust turboprop tactical transport aircraft, which is specifically designed to operate in difficult terrain and high-altitude regions, a strategic necessity for a country like India.
India has acquired a total of 12 C-130J aircraft from the United States. The first batch of six aircraft was delivered in 2008, while the remaining six were inducted between 2011 and 2019. Globally, the C-130J is regarded as one of the most reliable tactical airlifters in operation.
Features of the C-130J Super Hercules
- The aircraft can take off and land on short, small, and even unpaved airstrips with ease.
- It is highly effective in high-altitude and remote regions such as Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, where runways are short and challenging.
- The Daulat Beg Oldi airstrip in Ladakh, located at an altitude of approximately 16,614 feet above sea level, is considered one of the most demanding airstrips in the world.
- The C-130J’s ability to operate in such extreme conditions holds significant strategic importance for the Indian Air Force.
- The aircraft is not limited to cargo transport but serves as a multi-role platform.
- It can conduct special operations and undertake long-distance missions with aerial refuelling capability.
- It is used for paradrop operations, search and rescue (SAR) missions, and for delivering relief supplies during natural disasters.
Saturday’s landing marked PM Modi’s second arrival at the new Emergency Landing Field aboard a C-130J. Earlier, in November 2021, he had landed on the Purvanchal Expressway in Sultanpur using the same aircraft.
The C-130J’s ability to operate without requiring long runways makes it ideal for special operations. In April 2023, the aircraft was also deployed to evacuate Indian nationals stranded in Sudan.
According to its manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, tactical airlift missions demand not only high speed but also the capability to operate at low altitudes and reduced speeds while accessing remote areas, requirements that the C-130J fully meets.
