The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested six officials from the Delhi Transport Department on charges of bribery and corruption, news agency PTI reported citing officials on Wednesday. This comes after the ruling Aam Aadmi Party recently lost the Delhi Assembly elections.
The CBI has been receiving several complaints regarding rampant corruption within the department. The federal probe agency carried out surveillance and confirmed the validity of the complaints before making any arrests. The investigation uncovered initial evidence of corruption across different levels, which ultimately resulted in the arrests.
The Delhi Transport Department has come under scrutiny after BJP alleged a corruption scam involving the purchase of 1,000 low-floor buses during the AAP government's tenure.
The Chief Secretary recommended a CBI investigation, which was approved by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. The city’s public transport system began in 1948 when the Ministry of Transport took over bus services, forming the Delhi Transport Service.
In 1950, the Delhi Road Transport Authority was created, later becoming part of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. In 1971, the central government took control following inefficiencies and revenue losses in the system.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had been in power in Delhi for over a decade, faced a setback in the recent Assembly elections. Party leader Arvind Kejriwal lost his seat to BJP's Parvesh Verma in New Delhi. With this victory, the BJP has regained control of Delhi after nearly 30 years, marking the first time in 27 years that the party will hold power both at the Centre and in the national capital simultaneously.
The BJP won 48 seats and the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP secured only 22 seats, while the Congress party continued its poor performance, failing to win a single seat for the third consecutive time.
