A team of CBI officials reached the hospital on Monday in connection with the investigation into the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Bengal, in the year 2024.
The team, comprised of six officials, including a joint director-level officer, met with the hospital's principal, medical superintendent, vice-principal, and other officials. They also inspected the site where the crime occurred.
The female doctor was raped and murdered on the hospital premises on the night of August 9, 2024. Immediately after the incident, allegations were made of destruction of evidence and attempts to hush up the case.
Calcutta HC Orders fresh probe
The CBI visit comes as part of a fresh investigation into the case after the Calcutta High Court last month ordered, based on the allegations of destruction of evidence in the case and the specific allegations made by the victim's family.
The court directed the CBI to re-investigate the entire chain of events from the time the woman doctor had dinner that night till her cremation the next evening.
The investigating agency has been empowered to question any person as required. Furthermore, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) will thoroughly investigate all specific allegations made by the victim's family.
The court directed the SIT to submit its report by the next hearing on June 25. Newly appointed West Bengal Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee had said last week that the state government had reopened the files related to the RG Kar case.

Mukherjee held a meeting with the victim's parents for about an hour and a half to understand their concerns about alleged shortcomings in the investigation and handling of the case. On January 20, 2025, civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, convicted in the case, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
