In a bid to enhance interstate connectivity, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved three railway projects worth Rs 9,072 crore on Tuesday. Cleared under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the projects aim to improve multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency through integrated planning and stakeholder consultations.

These projects include:

  • Gondia - Jabalpur Doubling
  • Punarakh - Kiul 3rd and 4th line
  • Gamharia - Chandil 3rd and 4th line

Spanning eight districts across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, the projects will expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 307 km. The upgraded routes are expected to improve connectivity for around 5,407 villages with a combined population of nearly 98 lakh.

Officials said the multi-tracking works will significantly increase line capacity, easing congestion and improving operational efficiency and service reliability. The enhanced infrastructure is projected to handle additional freight traffic of 5.2 crore tonnes per annum (MTPA).

The routes are critical for transporting commodities such as coal, steel, iron ore, cement, fertilisers, foodgrains, petroleum products and other bulk goods.

The projects are also expected to improve rail access to several tourist destinations, including Kachnar Shiv Temple and Dhuandhar Waterfall in Jabalpur, Kanha and Pench National Parks, Chandil Dam, Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary and other regional attractions.

Officials said the initiatives align with the Prime Minister’s vision of comprehensive regional development and self-reliance, generating employment and strengthening local economies.

As rail transport is considered energy-efficient and environment-friendly, the expanded capacity is expected to reduce logistics costs, cut oil imports by an estimated 6 crore litres and lower carbon emissions by around 30 crore kilograms, equivalent to planting one crore trees.

The projects are seen as a major step toward modernising railway infrastructure while supporting economic growth and sustainability goals.
