The Centre is planning to implement 33 per cent of seat reservation for women in the Lok Sabha from the 2029 General Elections. This initiative comes after the passage of an act, the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is a women's reservation bill that aims to increase women's representation in national politics by reserving one-third of the seats.
The government is aiming to roll out the women’s quota in the next election, according to a report by The Indian Express.
The act can come into effect once there is a fresh delimitation of parliamentary constituencies. Delimitation is the process of fixing limits or boundaries of the state assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies. There is a statutory freeze on delimitation until 2026. Delimitation is linked to the Census. The delimitation exercise is based on the data collected from the first census performed after the law came into force.
The upcoming Census is set to take place by March 1, 2027. The census exercise aims to count the population of the most populated country in the world.
The sources also mentioned that the preparations are underway to ensure that the delimitation exercise is initiated successfully after the statutory freeze is lifted. Once the freeze is lifted, a commission will be formed, representation will be collected from various states, and a report will be prepared. The delimitation exercise should be completed before the announcement of the dates of the 2029 General Elections to roll out the women’s quota, beginning with the upcoming elections.

The plan of implementing a one-third women’s quota in the General Elections has triggered political controversies. The Southern states, which have always been ahead in population control, claim that this can reduce their representation in the Lok Sabha. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has accused the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government of planning to reduce the seats of Tamil Nadu Assembly.
