Idana Mata Fire Bath: The festival of Chaitra Navratri begins today, that is April 9 and will continue till April 17. Chaitra Navratri, also known as Vasanta Navratri, is a significant nine-day Hindu festival that marks the beginning of the Hindu luni-solar calendar 'Chaitra'. Each day of this nine-day festival is dedicated to the nine avatars of Goddess Durga and today marks the first day of this auspicious festivity. On this day, devotees visit various temples of 'Mata Adishakti' to offer their prayers.
One such temple is Rajasthan's Idana Mata Mandir, which is famous for Mata's 'fire bath'. This miracle is the centre of faith for the people of the Mewar region. The first day of Chaitra Navratri saw the miracle of Mata's fire bath on Tuesday. A lot of people flocked to the temple to witness this miraculous scene. The temple is located about 60 km from Udaipur city on the Aravalli hills. Surprisingly, there is no roof in the temple.
Mystery Behind Idhana Mata Fire Bath
What makes Idana Mata Temple unique is that it gets engulfed in fire 2-3 times in a month or 3-4 times in a year, all by itself. It is said that when the burden of Idana Mata becomes heavy, the goddess herself takes the form of 'Jwaladevi'. The fire gradually takes a gigantic form with flames reaching 10 to 20 feet high.

This miracle has been termed by the locals as the fire bath of the Idana Mata. In other words, Idana Mata here enjoys 'agni snaan'. Till date, no one has been able to crack the mystery behind this fire eruption. Everything gets burnt into ashes except the stone idol of Idana Devi.
According to locals, Idana Mata cures paralysis. According to priests, Devi takes 'agni snaan' when she is pleased by the offerings of the devotees who visit to have her blessings. Today at around 10:20 AM flames suddenly started rising around the statue. The rising flame was intact for about two hour as devotees witnessed this miraculous scene. The priests removed the jewelleries from the idol when the fire erupted. After 12:30 PM the idol was adorned once again, after the fire cooled down.
Idana Mata had taken a fire bath on March 24, during the month of Chaitra, the last year. The fire bath has no set day or time.
