About Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport

Chandigarh’s airport was officially renamed Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in 2022, marking the revolutionary’s 115th birth anniversary.

The Rs 485-crore facility is a joint venture of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Punjab, and Haryana. AAI holds 51 percent, while both states share equal stakes of 24.5 percent each. Inaugurated on September 11, 2015, the airport straddles Chandigarh and Mohali, its runway lies in Chandigarh, while the international terminal is located on 307 acres of land in Jhiurheri village, Mohali.

The airport’s naming has been a matter of political debate. Initially, the Congress-led Haryana government under Bhupinder Singh Hooda supported Punjab’s proposal to honor Bhagat Singh. Later, Haryana’s BJP government under Manohar Lal Khattar suggested naming it after RSS leader Mangel Sen. In 2017, Punjab passed a resolution for “Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Mohali,” which Haryana opposed, objecting to the inclusion of “Mohali.” Eventually, consensus was reached to retain Bhagat Singh’s name, though the word “Mohali” was excluded from the official title.
