Chandigarh Flexi-Ticket Policy: The Chandigarh administration is set to introduce a flexible movie ticket pricing system in multiplexes from April 2026. Under the proposed policy, cinemas will be allowed to vary ticket prices based on demand, offering lower rates on weekdays and higher prices on weekends.

The move aims to bring Chandigarh in line with neighbouring Punjab and Haryana, where flexible pricing is already in place. Officials believe the policy will benefit moviegoers while also boosting government revenue.

First-of-Its-Kind Policy for Chandigarh

This is the first time such a pricing policy is being framed in Chandigarh. Currently, cinema operators are permitted to revise ticket prices only twice a year. The new system will remove this restriction and allow dynamic pricing depending on demand.

In addition to weekday and weekend pricing, theatres will be able to charge lower rates for films with limited demand and higher prices for popular or high-demand screenings.

Proposal Sent for Approval

Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav said the proposal has been sent to the Excise Department for its comments. “Once we receive the response, we plan to implement the flexible pricing system from April,” he said.

Revenue Impact and GST Collection

At present, a uniform ticket price applies across all days and films in Chandigarh. The new system will remove the existing cap on price increases. The administration earns 18 per cent GST on every movie ticket sold and expects revenue to rise once flexible pricing is introduced.

Officials pointed out that similar demand-based pricing is already used for airline tickets and Shatabdi train fares.

Already in Place in Tricity Neighbours

While Chandigarh has followed a fixed pricing structure so far, flexible ticket pricing is already operational in Mohali and Panchkula. According to the Estate Department, the policy is expected to increase, not reduce, the administration’s revenue.

Multiplexes in Chandigarh

Chandigarh currently has seven multiplexes, including those at Nexus Elante Mall, Centra Mall, City Emporium Mall (Industrial Area), TDI Mall (Sector 17), Piccadilly Square Mall (Sector 34), Dhillon Complex (Manimajra), and DLF City Centre Mall (IT Park).

Current Ticket Prices vs Neighbouring States

At present, movie ticket prices in Chandigarh range between Rs 280 and Rs 300, with no difference between weekdays and weekends. In neighbouring states, however, prices vary widely, from as low as Rs 150 to as high as Rs 600, depending on demand, timing and the popularity of films.

What Is a Flexi-Ticket Policy And Its Benefits?

A flexi-ticket policy allows prices to change based on demand rather than remaining fixed. In the case of movie tickets, this means cheaper rates for low-demand shows and higher prices for popular screenings, offering greater flexibility to both cinema operators and viewers.
