Chennai-Bengaluru Highway Accident: Four individuals lost their lives and 44 others sustained injuries after a Karnataka government bus collided with a tipper lorry near SIPCOT Emerald Nagar, Ranipet district, on the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway late Wednesday night.
According to The New Indian Express report, the victims, identified as N. Somasekaran (30), V. Manjunath (31), C. Sankara (32) and V. Krishnappa (65), were residents of Kolar district in Karnataka. They were part of a group returning from the Adhiparasakthi Temple in Melmaruvathur after completing darshan.
Police stated that the crash occurred when one of the buses attempted to overtake a tipper lorry carrying vegetables from Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, to Chennai. The bus collided head-on with the lorry, causing it to overturn. The impact killed four passengers instantly.
Emergency services arrived immediately and the injured were taken to the Walajah Government Hospital. Seven critically injured passengers were later shifted to Vellore Adukamparai Government Hospital and Christian Medical College in Ranipet for specialised care.
On Thursday, Ranipet Collector Chandrakala, Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Shukla and Tamil Nadu Minister Gandhi visited the injured in hospital. They directed authorities to ensure proper medical treatment for all victims.
The accident involved three Karnataka government buses travelling together. While two buses remained unaffected, investigations revealed that reckless overtaking by one bus contributed to the tragedy.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident and further updates are awaited.
In separate incident, three canters collided on the Yamuna Expressway near milestone 142 in the Saadabad area on Wednesday evening due to heavy fog, resulting in the deaths of all three drivers. The accident occurred when a canter towing a damaged vehicle broke its chain, and a third canter, unable to stop in time due to poor visibility, crashed into them. The deceased drivers were identified as Rahul (Faridabad), Ranjit (Hathras), and Tarun (Agra). Several others sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment in Agra. The incident highlights the dangers of poor visibility during foggy conditions on highways.
