A chemistry student found himself in the position of real-life Walter White, hired by a drug cartel in Chennai to make meth in a scenario straight out of the classic series 'Breaking Bad'.
Seven young persons, including an MSc chemistry student and four robotics engineering graduates, were detained for allegedly setting up a methamphetamine lab in Kodungaiyur.
Police searched the location on Wednesday and discovered meth, chemicals, and laboratory equipment. According to a TOI report, the suspects' parents assumed their children were studying and were ignorant of the unlawful activities taking place in their home.
The raid was carried out by the city's newly formed Anti-Drug Intelligence Unit (ADIU), which had gathered special intelligence regarding the operation.
They recovered 250 grams of meth, two mobile phones, lab equipment, and a number of chemicals. Fleming Francis (21) of Teynampet, Naveen (22) of Poonamallee, Pravin Pranav (21) of Kodungaiyur, Kishore (21), Gnanapandian (22) of Nandiyambakkam, Arunkumar (22) of Kodungaiyur, and Dhanush (23) of Manali have all been arrested.
Gnanapandian is now pursuing an MSc in Chemistry, and the others have recently graduated from robotics engineering.
ADIU's assistant commissioner of police, K Manoj, revealed that the unit has been monitoring synthetic drug traffickers in the city. The operation was carried out in a room at one of the suspect's residences, where the activities remained hidden from the parents.
