A Chennai couple were arrested for the alleged murder of a 15-year-old domestic worker. The accused couple, identified as Mohammad Nishad and Nasiya, tortured the minor at their flat located in the Mehta Nagar area of Aminjikarai, police said on Saturday. They stated that the teenager, originally from Thanjavur, was reportedly subjected to inhuman treatment, including burns inflicted with a hot iron and cigarette butts, before succumbing to her injuries.

According to police, the young girl's body was found abandoned in the toilet of the couple’s home, where she had allegedly suffered severe injuries from repeated branding and burning. After the incident, the accused couple reportedly fled to a relative’s residence, leaving the victim’s body behind.

Reportedly, the couple’s lawyer eventually tipped off the police, leading to their arrest. Four other individuals have also been detained as part of the ongoing investigation. The victim’s body was sent to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for a postmortem examination, which police expect will shed further light on the specific cause of death.

Authorities have registered a case with the Aminjikarai police station and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the girl’s employment and her treatment at the hands of the accused. The victim’s mother, a widow from Thanjavur district, has been notified about the incident and the body will be transferred following the post-mortem examination.

This incident mirrors other cases of domestic worker abuse in India, with numerous reports of exploitation, abuse and lack of protection. Earlier this year, another young girl, aged 17, was rescued in Ghaziabad after enduring nearly a year of imprisonment and brutal treatment.

In this case, the employer reportedly subjected her to regular beatings, severe injuries and extreme abuse, including crushing her chest underfoot. She was eventually discovered hiding under a staircase after escaping and a team from Bachpan Bachao Andolan, an anti-trafficking NGO, rescued her.
