Chennai Metro Phase 2: As part of its ambitious Phase II project, Chennai Metro Rail is planning to introduce commercial areas at various stations along its 118.9-kilometre network. These spaces will offer passengers opportunities to grab a bite, enjoy a coffee or shop quickly while travelling.
Chennai Metro Update: 3 Corridors, 128 Stations Planned In 118.9-km Network
The Phase II network will consist of 128 stations across three main corridors: Madhavaram to SIPCOT (Corridor 3), Light House to Poonamallee (Corridor 4) and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (Corridor 5). According to officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), many stations will feature retail and food outlets situated at the ticketing or concourse levels. This design will allow passengers to pass through these commercial areas before heading to the platforms.
The Hindu report cited an official as stating, “Having various outlets in the concourse makes stations lively and safer, which can attract more commuters to the Chennai Metro. Similar integration of shopping is seen in cities like Hong Kong and China, promoting public transport use and generating significant non-fare revenue.”
Chennai Metro: 35 Stations Identified For Dedicated Retail Development
While all stations will include some commercial space, 35 stations will have dedicated areas specifically for retail development. According to The Hindu report, in Corridor 3, for instance, property development is planned at the ticketing levels of 22 stations, including Madhavaram High Road, Sembiyam and Royapettah.
Corridor 4 will see commercial spaces at stations like Alapakkam and Boat Club, while Corridor 5 will feature outlets at Velmurugan Nagar and Alandur.
