Chennai Metro Phase II: In the next three years, commuters using the Thirumayilai MRTS station in Chennai will be able to access the nearby Metro station by walking just 50 metres through an elevated walkway. This is part of a broader plan by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to improve integration between the city’s Metro, suburban and MRTS networks.
The Hindu report cited CMRL officials as confirming that, skywalks and subways will be constructed at 13 key locations to ensure smoother and quicker transfers for passengers. These structures are part of the upcoming 118.9-kilometre Phase II Metro network, which includes three corridors. The new lines will connect important zones such as the central business district, Marina beach, IT corridor, and various northern and western suburbs.
The Phase II project has been designed to intersect with the existing 54-km Phase I network at multiple points. For instance, subways will link stations at Kilpauk, Thousand Lights, Nandanam, Koyambedu and St. Thomas Mount. At Vadapalani and Alandur, skywalks will connect stations from both phases.
To improve access to suburban rail stations, skywalks will also be built between Metro and suburban stations at Villivakkam, Perambur, Chetpet, and Kodambakkam. These links are planned to reduce transfer time and promote public transport usage.
The Hindu report cited senior official from CMRL as explaining that there will be "paid-to-paid area connectivity" between Phase I and II stations. “This allows a passenger to move from one phase to another without exiting the ticketed zone, saving time and making the journey hassle-free,” the official said.
