The incident occurred amid already inclement weather conditions across Chennai, which continues to grapple with incessant downpours and widespread waterlogging caused by the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) acknowledged the disruption, stating, “Due to a technical issue, the metro train was halted between High Court Station and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Metro Station.”

Following the incident, immediate evacuation was carried out, and the affected train was promptly withdrawn from the operational line. “Normal operations have resumed at 06:20 AM. We regret the inconvenience caused,” the post further read.

According to a report by NDTV, the metro train was travelling toward the Wimco Nagar Depot when an unexpected technical glitch forced it to stop abruptly inside the tunnel section. The disruption on Blue Line, one of the network's busiest, connecting the Wimco Nagar Depot to the Chennai International Airport, forced passengers to exit and walk along the tracks.

The metro service disruption occurred when Chennai and the surrounding districts continued to suffer the brunt of the incessant rain and weather instability caused by the weakened Cyclone Ditwah. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet.

A flood warning has been issued across Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts due to the significant inflows expected in the major river systems of the region.
