Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) has decided to scrap old metro cards as it enters the new system from August 1. Metro commuters will no longer be able to recharge their old cards. Only  Singara Chennai Card—based on the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) format—will be accepted for top-ups across all 41 metro stations from next month.

However, if you have an advanced balance in your Metro card, your card will be valid till the balance is exhausted, and as soon as the balance goes below Rs 50, you will have to submit your card at any Metro station ticket counter because it will cease to work. The ticket counter will issue a new Singara card to the user with no extra charges.

According to a report by Time Property, not only will the new card be issued at no cost, but the balance amount and security deposit from the old card will automatically be transferred to the new one.

The new Singara card that was introduced in 2023 follows the NCMC guidelines developed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. To make travel convenient, the Singara card is designed to serve as a single payment medium for multiple modes of transport, including buses, metro trains, and even toll booths.

CMRL also plans to set up help desks at every metro station to help passengers shift from the old to new card during this transition period. Other digital options, such as QR code-based tickets through mobile apps will remain unaffected.
