Chennai News: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will hold free vaccination camps for pet dogs on November 16 and 23 across the city, as part of its campaign to promote responsible pet ownership and enforce the rule on mandatory dog licensing.

According to officials, the camps will run from 8 AM to 5 PM at six GCC pet clinics. Pet owners can get their dogs vaccinated, microchipped and registered in a single visit. The move is aimed at encouraging compliance with the civic body’s recent order that makes it compulsory for all dog owners to obtain a licence and implant a microchip in their pets.

Chennai News: Low Registration Numbers Despite Mandatory Rule

Despite the mandatory policy, officials said that the response to registration has been lower than expected. So far, the GCC has licensed around 260 dogs and microchipped them as part of its recent drive. In 2024, the corporation issued 9,063 pet licences, while only 3,401 have been issued this year.

A recent GCC Council resolution emphasised the importance of licensing and vaccination in controlling the canine population and preventing diseases.

Meanwhile, several pet owners have complained about technical problems on the GCC’s online licensing portal, particularly with renewals and certificate uploads. Officials have assured that these issues will be resolved before inspections begin, to make the process smoother and ensure wider participation in the campaign.
