Chennai: As many as nine migrant labourers from Assam have been killed in a tragic accident at the Ennore Thermal Power Plant when scaffolding collapsed during construction work.

The injured were rushed to Stanley Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. As per the inputs received from the news agency PTI, the building was under construction, where the incident took place. 

The incident occurred in North Chennai, thermal power plant, when the fourth-floor construction site collapsed, trapping workers. Nine people lost their lives and were taken to Stanley Hospital for post-mortem, while another remains in critical condition, reported news agency IANS. 

The secretary of TANGEDCO confirmed that nine people have lost their lives during the collapse at the thermal power plant. The deceased are said to be labourers from Assam.

"There was an unfortunate incident at the Ennore Thermal Power construction site where a steel arch fell and 9 people died. These people were from Assam and the surrounding areas. One person is injured. BHEL officials are present at the spot," says Dr J.Radhakrishnan, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, and the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO). 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects to the workers who lost their lives in a tragic accident at the Ennore Thermal Power construction site in Tamil Nadu, where a steel arch collapsed, claiming nine lives.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Saddened by the mishap due to the collapse of a building in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families in this difficult hour. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given ₹50,000.”
