Chennai News: Construction work on Chennai’s first cable-stayed bridge is set to begin shortly as part of the Chennai Port–Maduravoyal elevated corridor project. The bridge will be built near Napier Bridge and is one of three such bridges planned along the 20-km double-decker corridor.

According to officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the other two cable-stayed bridges will come up at Koyambedu and Maduravoyal. Each of the bridges will be 300 metres long, with spans of 75 metres. The total cost for the three bridges is estimated at Rs 180 crore.

According to The Hindu report, the Napier Bridge site, the elevated corridor will pass over Swami Sivananda Salai with a single pier structure. A ramp will also be constructed through Island Grounds. Piling work in the area is expected to commence soon.

In Koyambedu, the corridor will be constructed above the Chennai Metro line, and at Maduravoyal, it will pass over an existing grade separator. The entire corridor is expected to be completed by February 2027. Around 30 per cent of the piling work has been finished, with 4,842 piles planned for the project.

The project, being implemented under the Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme, has been divided into four packages. It is being executed under the engineering procurement construction (EPC) mode. The agreement for the four-lane elevated corridor was signed on September 11, 2023, and the work order was issued on November 23, 2023.

The corridor will include six exit points and seven entry ramps on one tier, while the other tier will provide a direct link between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal. Over 9,400 components for the superstructure are currently being cast at two dedicated yards.
