Chennai Weather: Several coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, received fresh rainfall on Tuesday, ending a brief dry phase after Cyclone Ditwah. The showers brought some relief as overcast skies and intermittent rain were reported across parts of the State.

The Hindu report cited weather officials as stating that light to moderate rainfall was recorded in Chennai, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and parts of north Tamil Nadu. Parangipettai in Cuddalore district received 4 cm of rain, while VIT-Chennai and Sathyabama University reported 3 cm each. Poonamallee recorded 2 cm and Puducherry and Neyveli received 1 cm each. Areas such as Pallikaranai, Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam in Chennai also saw light showers.

Chennai Weather: Day Temperatures Dip Slightly

Cloud cover and rainfall led to a drop in daytime temperatures across several districts. The highest maximum temperature in the State on Tuesday was recorded at 30.6 degrees Celsius in Erode, which was nearly one degree below the seasonal average.

Tamil Nadu: Water Release Increased From Reservoir

With Chembarambakkam reservoir, a major drinking water source for Chennai, remaining full, the Water Resources Department increased the discharge to 500 cubic feet per second by Tuesday evening following mild rainfall in the catchment areas.

Chennai Weather Forecast Till December 18

The Hindu report citedP. Senthamarai Kannan, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), said the return of rainfall was due to a favourable wind pattern over the region. He added that similar weather conditions are expected to continue till December 18. Night temperatures in Chennai may rise slightly on Wednesday before dropping by two to three degrees from Thursday.

Rainfall Status Across The State

Tamil Nadu has received about 42 cm of rainfall since October 1, which is around 2 per cent above the seasonal average. However, districts such as Chengalpattu, Karur and Krishnagiri continue to report deficits due to recent dry days. The RMC has forecast light rain and warmer nights for Chennai on Wednesday, with drier weather likely to return later this week.
