Chennai News: Chennai will soon have100 electric low-floor buses, expected to hit the roads by June. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is preparing to roll out these environment-friendly buses as part of its plan to modernise public transport in the city.
Tamil Nadu Transport Minister SS Sivasankar, along with senior officials, recently reviewed the new buses and ongoing infrastructure development. The buses will be operated from five different depots—Vyasarpadi, Perumbakkam, Poonamallee, Pallavan Illam and Tondiarpet.
The new fleet is designed with low-floor boarding, making travel easier for the elderly, children and persons with disabilities. The initiative is part of a larger effort to make public transport more accessible and sustainable.
A total of 625 electric buses are expected to be deployed across the city by the end of 2025. Earlier this year, MTC had floated tenders to purchase 600 electric buses under a Gross Cost Contract (GCC). These buses will be funded under the Chennai City Partnership project supported by the World Bank. In the first phase, 500 non-air-conditioned buses and 100 air-conditioned ones will be introduced.
Chennai Weather
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light rainfall in Chennai over the next two days. A mild breeze is also expected, offering some relief from the ongoing heat. However, the weather office clarified that there will be no major drop in temperatures.
Chennai is likely to record maximum temperatures between 37 and 38 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures at 28 degrees Celsius. Strong winds of up to 55 km/h are expected over the South Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and nearby sea areas until 22 April.
