Chennai News: To tackle traffic congestion during school hours, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and Chennai Traffic Police are preparing to introduce one-way traffic systems near several schools in high-density areas. The decision comes after a noticeable rise in traffic since schools reopened earlier this month.
According to officials, traffic build-up near school zones during peak hours has become a major concern. In response, traffic police have asked school authorities to inform parents about the new traffic arrangements. Discussions are already underway between school managements and parents.
However, parents have expressed concerns that some of the recent measures—such as barricades placed near schools to protect pedestrian walkways—have reduced available space for vehicle parking and student drop-offs. While these barricades were installed to ensure student safety, they have unintentionally added to the traffic woes.
Last year, traffic police allowed temporary parking on wide footpaths near schools, especially for parents of younger children. This year, the GCC has placed barricades on these paths, removing the temporary parking option.
The issue is likely to be raised in the upcoming Corporation Council meeting. Egmore councillor Fatima Ahmed Muzaffer suggested using real-time traffic data from the Integrated Command and Control Centre to design better traffic plans.
Councillor Parithi Elamsurithi also highlighted the need for one-way systems near Kerala Vidyalaya on EVR Periyar first lane and other similar locations, where students cross busy roads. He noted that some streets like Dr Alagappa Road already follow a one-way system and called for similar measures in other school zones.
