Chennai Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued an orange alert for several districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, and Villupuram districts, on December 18, forecasting heavy rainfall. It further issued a yellow alert for the capital city and nearby districts on Tuesday and Thursday, warning of heavy rain.

The weather department on Tuesday informed that a low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal on Monday and is expected to move towards the coastal region of Tamil Nadu in the upcoming days. It further stated that the low-pressure area is expected to get intensified as it approaches the southern state. This system might bring heavy rain in several regions, especially in the north coastal districts, including Chennai, Nagapattinam, and nearby areas, between December 17 and 19.

The IMD bulletin stated that several regions are likely to experience thunderstorms and lightning in upcoming days. "On Tuesday, the city and suburbs are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with thunderstorms and lightning in some areas. The sky may be partly cloudy, with the maximum temperature around 29-30 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature around 22-23 degrees Celsius," the bulletin stated.

While the minimum temperature in the city during these three days is likely to be around 22 degrees Celsius, the maximum temperature is expected to be around 30 degrees Celsius. The IMD stated that most of west-central India, as well as parts of northeast India, are expected to receive above-normal rainfall throughout December.

These areas are also likely to experience a dip in temperature because of the rainfall. The fishermen and residents of the coastal regions were advised to follow the guidelines and local advisories. Besides, the weather department issued a yellow alert for Delhi NCR, emphasising that the region will experience a cold wave and dense fog in the upcoming days.
