Chennai Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rains in Chennai city till September 2. However, the weather department has predicted light rain or drizzle accompanied by cloudy skies on Sunday. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 33 degrees Celsius. As a result of extreme weather conditions, at least 17 domestic as well as international flights were delayed on Friday in Tamil Nadu capital, Chennai. While some flights faced major delays, others were diverted to other airports amid unavoidable weather.
Chennai has been witnessing rain accompanied with heavy winds for several days, which has caused major disruptions to the normal routine of people. Due to the delays and diversions of nearly two dozens flights resulted in frustrations among passengers who had to wait long hours to reach their destinations.
A total of 15 flights were rescheduled after facing delays. Flights that were supposed to take off between 7:30 pm and 10 pm, could not depart due to low visibility. According to airport authorities, the weather conditions were not favourable. Some flights could not make the landing at the Chennai Airport, and had to circle the airport, said a report by Times of India.
Flights approaching from Delhi, Visakhapatnam and Coimbatore were redirected to Bengaluru, while flights from Madurai were sent to Trichy. The rest of the flights landed later than expected. Similarly, 15 flights heading to Singapore, Kuwait, Dubai, Delhi, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, and Hyderabad were delayed by up to two hours.
Passengers had to wait longer than usual to board their flights. Operations returned to normal after 10:30pm, according to airport officials.
