Heavy rain is forecasted across Chennai and the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday due to a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal, extending to southern parts of the state, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (Chennai). This weather system is expected to bring heavy rain to Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts over the next two days, potentially impacting daily life and agricultural activities.

Amid these weather warnings, the Vaigai Dam’s water level witnessed a steady rise, currently at 64.34 feet, edging closer to its full capacity of 71 feet. The inflow from the Mullaperiyar River contributed to this increase, leading authorities to closely monitor the situation. The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department set flood alert thresholds, with warnings issued at 66, 68.5 and 69 feet.

If the water levels continue to rise, water will be released for irrigation in Madurai district, a significant boost for the region’s farmers. For agricultural communities dependent on the Vaigai Dam, the rising water is promising. The water release will support paddy cultivation in Theni, Dindigul, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts.
