Devi, a techie and steadfast fan of the RCB team, is among the 11 people killed in a stampede outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium during the IPL victory celebration event. The only child to her parents, she requested her boss a few hours’ off in the middle of her shift to attend RCB’s victory parade.
Recalling the episode, one of her friends, cited by the TOI, said Devi had sought permission from her boss and finally got approval around 2.30 pm to participate in the event. “Her laptop is still on the table and her bags are there, but she is not,” her friend recalled.

Devi, originally from Tamil Nadu, had completed her education in Bengaluru and started working in the city. A die-hard fan of Virat Kohli, she hadn’t missed a single match since moving there. When she heard that RCB was giving away tickets to attend the celebrations at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, she was determined to attend the event, the aforementioned media outlet reported citing her friend.
According to a report by the TOI, the unrest erupted after rumours that free tickets were being distributed at gate number 7 to attend a felicitation ceremony of RCB inside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. This sparked panic among fans, leading to the deadly stampede.
Access to the felicitation ceremony was restricted to individuals with valid tickets only.
Social activist Snehamayi Krishna filed a complaint in the Cubbon Park Police Station, seeking a negligence case against Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM Shivakumar and office bearers of the Karnataka State Cricket Board, as per ANI.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expressed his anguish over the incident and said issue an apology. He said the capacity of the stadium was to accommodate 35000 people but over 3 lakh turned up for the event. He also broke down while addressing the media about the incident.
The Karnataka High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the mishap and the case will be heard today at 2:30.
