Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah’s remark on Operation Sindoor, which is seen as referring to Army Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, has created a massive uproar. Opposition has been demanding Shah’s removal after his video, making objectionable remarks against Colonel Qureshi, went fervently viral across social media platforms.    

Union Minister Savitri Thakur and MLA Usha Thakur were also present on the stage during the incident.

The entire incident took place during an event in the Indore district on Monday. Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the success of Operation Sindoor, Vijay Shah said the former had sent a woman from the same community as the people in Pakistan to avenge the killing of 26 people by Islamabad-backed terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. 

“They undressed Hindus and killed them. Those who destroyed the sindoor of our daughters, Modi Ji sent their own sister to teach them a lesson,” he said.  

As soon as this statement went viral, it began to be linked with Colonel Sophia Qureshi, sparking political outrage. 

The Congress Party said the BJP leader had called the Army’s ‘brave daughter’ a sister of terrorists, seeking his resignation from the ministerial post.

“A minister of the BJP's Madhya Pradesh government has made extremely insulting, shameful, and cheap remarks about our brave daughter, Colonel Sofia Quraishi. The terrorists in Pahalgam wanted to divide the country, but during the entire 'Operation Sindoor,' the nation stood united in giving a befitting reply to the terrorists . The mentality of BJP-RSS has been anti-woman. First, the wife of a martyred naval officer in Pahalgam was trolled on social media, then the daughter of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri was harassed, and now a BJP minister is making such indecent remarks about our hero Sofia Quraishi. Modi ji should immediately sack such a minister,” Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge posted on X. 

Shah later issued a clarification over his statement, saying that his comment was misunderstood.

"We respect the actions taken by the Indian forces in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. My statement has been misunderstood. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi has made the nation proud. There is no question of disrespect,” he said.
