Congress Gets Fresh I-T Notices: The Income Tax department has served fresh notices to the Congress party, raising a tax demand of Rs 1,745 crore for the assessment years 2014-15 to 2016-17, news agency PTI reported on Sunday citing sources in the party.
The latest notices, issued weeks ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha Election, have brought the party's total outstanding tax dues to Rs 3,567 crore. According to PTI's sources, the department has sought tax payments of Rs 663 crore pertaining to AY 2014-15 and Rs 417 crore pertaining to AY 2016-2017.
The authorities have done away with the tax exemption available to political parties and have imposed taxes on the basis of the entire collections, they added. The Congress has also been taxed for "third-party entries" found in diaries recovered from some of its leaders by investigating agencies during raids, the sources said.
Congress, which is presently the main opposition party of the country, on Friday said that it has received I-T department notices wherein it has been asked to pay Rs 1,823 crore in outstanding liabilities. The tax authorities have already recovered Rs 135 crore from the Congress party's bank accounts in line with a tax demand pertaining to previous years.
On Thursday, the Delhi High Court dismissed the party's plea against the I-T department order opening reassessment proceedings against it in connection with AYs 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21. Earlier, the court had dismissed the Congress's plea against re-assessment for AY 2014 to 2017.
