The Congress party approaches other opposition parties to write a joint letter seeking a special Parliament session to discuss the Pahalgam Attack and the future steps which the government is planning to take, according to the officials. The letter is expected to be sent by this evening or tomorrow.
In a deadly terrorist attack on Tuesday in Pahalgam, a prominent tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir, 26 people, mostly tourists, lost their lives.
However, during the all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday, several Opposition leaders, including Congress president and Rajya Sabha Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, TMC’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay, and AAP’s Sanjay Singh, raised concerns, asserting that the attack reflected “lapses” in security and intelligence.
Sources said the Central government acknowledged the lapses during the meeting. “If nothing had gone wrong, why would we be sitting here? There have been lapses somewhere that we have to find out and we want to fix them for the future,” a senior government leader was quoted as saying during the discussions.
In fact, the demand for a special Parliament session was first raised during the all-party meeting by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) representative and Rajya Sabha MP Haris Beeran.
According to sources, such a session would serve as an opportunity for political parties to demonstrate national unity against terrorism, pose critical questions to ensure accountability, and allow the government to present its position.
This comes days after PM Modi Thursday promised retribution and said: “India will identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers” and would “pursue them to the ends of the earth”.
About Pahalgam Attack
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe into the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, most of them tourists. The handover comes amid ongoing "unprovoked" small arms fire from Pakistan along the Line of Control, now entering its third consecutive day.
In the days since the attack, security forces have razed the homes of 10 identified terrorists across Jammu and Kashmir, including that of Adil Hussain Thokar in Anantnag, who has been named as one of the gunmen who opened fire at the Baisaran meadow.
