Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has urged Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee to campaign in support of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is going to contest the Lok Sabha (Lok Sabha) by-election from the Wayanad seat of Kerala. Chidambaram came to Kolkata on Thursday and met Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, reports jagran.com.
According to media reports, Mamata Banerjee has very good relations with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. In the INDIA meeting held before the Lok Sabha elections, Mamata proposed that Priyanka contest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Varanasi seat.
According to jagran.com quoting sources, Congress is trying to improve its relations with Trinamool. This request is also being described as an initiative in that direction.
It has been often claimed that due to the strong opposition of state party leader Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, the alliance between Congress-Trinamool could not be formed in Bengal in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. This has created cracks in the relationship between the two parties. Chidambaram is trying to bridge it.
Adhir Ranjan, one of the Bengal chief minister's strongest critics, has lost the Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency in these elections after five straight victories. On Thursday, he also resigned as the president of the Bengal Congress Unit. However, there is no confirmation on whether the resignation has been accepted.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will contest from the Wayanad parliamentary seat after Rahul Gandhi chose Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli to represent in the 18th Lok Sabha. Rahul Gandhi had contested the Lok Sabha polls from two seats: Rae Bareli and Wayanad. As he won both seats in the election, he could choose only one. So, he chose to leave the Wayanad parliamentary constituency and will be representing Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha. Rahul represented Wayanad Lok Sabha in the last Lok Sabha polls. He is the sitting MP from the seat.
