A Congress activist, Manik Roy, died on Thursday after allegedly being tied to a tree and beaten by a group of people in Moinaguri, Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, officials said. Roy was reportedly attacked with iron rods and sticks due to a dispute with his neighbours on Wednesday night. Police rescued him from Moinaguri and transported him to Jalpaiguri Super Speciality Hospital in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

His family and the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) president, Adhir Chowdhury, alleged that some of the attackers were affiliated with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Following the incident, five persons were arrested on Thursday in connection with the incident.
Roy's wife claimed he had been receiving death threats for some time. "It seems that Congress workers have no right to pursue political activities in TMC-ruled West Bengal," Chowdhury said. “We want a fair probe into the murder of Roy,” he added.
In response, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh described the incident as unfortunate and said that those responsible should be held accountable. Any attempt to politicise this should be denounced, Ghosh asserted.
